teaching experience with Basic

MY FIRST TEACHING EXPERIENCE WITH BASIC
Today it was my first teaching experience with Basic English and it was very nice because I arrived just on time, so I could set everything before all the students arrived and I started the class some minutes before it was supposed to.
The warm up was very nice because students looked interested on what they were doing and they enjoyed it. This group of students is kind of difficult to deal with sometimes because they do not like to use their English even though they know in English what they want to express or unless you understand what they want to say.
Something that happened is that it was kind of difficult to call their attention after developing a speaking activity because they continue speaking even though you ask them to finish the activity; and based on that the teacher suggested me to look for a strategy to call their attention, so next time I will do something.
As it is a group of 24 students, it is very difficult to have them all participate, so I just have to ask questions to some of them. The activities I developed were very nice and something that I liked was that at the end of the class I heard some comments like: good teacher, it was nice, etc.
As a feedback, the teacher told me I have to push students a little bit more to use their English because that is the only place they can practice it.
I can say it was the class in which I had less observations from the tutor and I come to the conclusion that it could be because it is a  lower level and the topics are easier than in Intermediate English

  1. As you stated, there are quite a few aspects that become trickier when teaching basic, I guess it's a matter of getting accostumed, but in my opinion, it is far more demanding and tiresome. Perhaps only topics are simpler, but not always easier to explain.

  2. Xavier,

I enjoyed reading your comments about your first class with the basic group. It is important for them to get used to speaking English in class; you have to look for a strategy, or maybe the tutor can give you a piece of advice on what he does. With a large group, you h ave to ask them to do pair and group work for them to have more chances of speaking and participating in class.

  3. this is nice that you did well in your first class with Basic students, and you said to have them involved can be kind of hard, but as teacher cristian said, you can make pairs or groups so that students have more chances on participating in classes.
